A body that was found Thursday in the water off Long Wharf has been identified.

The body of Paul J. Kirchhoff, 42, was found by a tour guide just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday floating in the water. He had last been seen just after midnight leaving J’s Oyster Bar on Portland Pier, where he was with friends.

Kirchhoff was a fisherman from the Portland area and had no fixed address at the time he died.

Kirchhoff had drowned, according to the medical examiner’s office. No physical trauma was found.

Portland police are still investigating the circumstances leading to the discovery of Kirchhoff’s body, although his death does not appear to be suspicious.

Anyone who may have information about Kirchhoff is asked to call the Portland Police Department at 874-8575.
