SCARBOROUGH — A 5-year-old girl was shot Monday night in a home on Milliken Road in Scarborough and died later at Maine Medical Center, Maine State Police said.
The girl was shot in the home at 17 Milliken Road around 7:30 p.m., state police Sgt. Chris Harriman said during a news conference near the shooting scene. She was taken by ambulance to the Portland hospital, where she died, Harriman said.
“We’re not sure what happened. It appears to be a gunshot wound,” Harriman said when asked about the circumstances.
The girl did not live in the home where the shooting occurred, but relatives do, according to Harriman. He would not specify which relatives.
Harriman said the girl was with “at least one parent” when the shooting happened. He said there were several other adults in the home at the time.
No one else was injured.

Harriman said state police detectives planned to spend much of the night at the home as they continued to investigate the circumstances of the girl’s death. He said he expected more details to be released Tuesday.
Milliken Road is a residential street near Dunstan Corner in Scarborough that connects Route 1 and Payne Road.
Police said there is no threat to the public. The Scarborough Police Department received a call about the shooting at 7:40 p.m.
State police immediately joined Scarborough police in their investigation, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
“We have joined Scarborough in a shooting investigation on Milliken Road. A girl was shot inside the home,” McCausland said around 9 p.m. “This is early on and we have just joined the investigation. We will continue to work with Scarborough police to determine the circumstances.”
