With current NHL players not allowed to compete in the Olympics this year, many former Portland Pirates players are getting a chance to represent their countries in South Korea.
At least nine ex-Pirates are on Olympic men’s hockey rosters, including three goalies – Jhonas Enroth of Sweden, Jonas Hiller of Switzerland and David Leggio of the U.S.
Hiller, who played six games for the Pirates in 2007-08, was in the Olympics for the third time and was Switzerland’s No. 1 goalie, but the Swiss were eliminated Tuesday with a 2-1 loss to Germany.
Enroth, one of the winningest goalies in Pirates history with 74 victories from 2008-11, played in 1 of 3 games for Sweden during the preliminary round. Leggio, who shared goaltending duties with Enroth in 2010-11, has yet to appear in a game during the Olympics.
Not surprisingly, Canada has the most former Pirates: forwards Andrew Ebbett (2007-08), Gilbert Brule (2013-14) and Rob Klinkhammer (2012-13) and defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani (2008-11).
Chris Bourque (2004-05), the son of Hall of Famer Ray Bourque, is a forward for the U.S., and Felix Schutz (2008-10) is a forward for Germany.
