AUGUSTA — The Vinalhaven girls basketball team took another step in its quest to defend its Class D state title by thumping Greenville 54-34 in a D South regional semifinal Thursday at the Civic Center.
Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes led three players in double figures with 19 points and Vinalhaven broke open a close game in the third quarter to surge into the regional final.
The top-seeded Vikings (20-0) will face No. 2 Rangeley (18-2) in the final at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Ashlyn Littlefield and Cheyenne Bickford each scored 10 points for Vinalhaven, which led just 24-23 at the half before out-scoring Greenville 18-3 in the third quarter.
Halle Pelletier scored 11 points to pace No. 4 Greenville (10-10).
