A bicyclist was struck and critically injured by a motor vehicle Wednesday evening on Main Street in Sanford.

Sgt. Craig Anderson of the Sanford Police Department in a statement said the bicyclist and car were both traveling north on Main Street around 5:54 p.m. when the car hit the bike.

Anderson said the male bicyclist was initially transported to Southern Maine Medical Center before he was transported by Lifeflight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

“I believe he was undergoing surgery (at MMC),” Anderson said. The man’s condition was unknown late Wednesday. “His injuries were certainly very serious.”

The driver, who was not injured, has not been charged and the accidents remains under investigation, Anderson said.

The accident took place in the vicinity of 863 Main St.
