The 2018 harness racing season will open a week later than scheduled thanks to recent snowstorms throughout the state.

Scarborough Downs, originally scheduled to hold its first live racing on March 24, will instead open on Saturday, March 31 with a post time of 1:30 p.m. Qualifying races scheduled to be held this Saturday have also been cancelled.

“Two major storms … have forced the cancellation of pre-meet qualifying races,” said Stephen Cobbett, director of operations for Scarborough Downs. “Without these qualifying sessions it would be impossible to card races for next weekend. Track employees are doing all that is humanly possible to prepare the facility and we are hopeful that Mother Nature will begin to cooperate so that the season can finally get underway next weekend.”
