TAMPA — The Boston Bruins announced that Brandon Carlo sustained a fractured left ankle in Saturday’s 5-1 win against the Florida Panthers and will miss the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.
Carlo will have the ankle surgically repaired later this week and his expected recovery time is 3-4 months. The team’s medical staff had been waiting for the swelling to come down to determine a next step.
“I feel bad for Brandon. The minute it happened, I didn’t even know what happened but when you go off on a stretcher, its generally not good news,” Coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Sometimes you get away with it if its something up high. But you could tell his leg buckled there and it was going to be tough for him. But he’s young, he’ll bounce back and hopefully get some better luck going forward.”
It is the second year in a row that Carlo’s been healthy for almost the entire season and had his playoffs snuffed out by an injury. Last season, he suffered a concussion in the season finale.
DEFENSEMAN CHARLIE McAvoy, who missed 15 games with an MCL sprain, returned Tuesday night and was paired again with captain Zdeno Chara, who played his second game after missing nine with an upper-body injury.
McAvoy played a team high 21:23 with two shots, four hits and he was a minus-2.
CASSIDY GAVE some promising news on Rick Nash, saying the power forward had skated for the first time.
The team has not announced what kind of injury he has, but there are indications it is a concussion.
Nash has not played since taking a high hit from the Lightning’s Cedric Paquette in Boston on March 17.
OTTAWA SENATORS captain Erik Karlsson did not play Wednesday night against the Sabres, and Coach Guy Boucher says he’s not expecting the defenseman to join the team for its final two games.
The Senators let Karlsson determine his playing schedule so he could be close to his wife after their baby was stillborn two weeks ago. Karlsson played the past four games after missing three of four.
Karlsson’s future in Ottawa is uncertain. Though he has one year left on his contract, the Senators are unsure if they can re-sign him to a long-term extension. They attempted to trade him this year.
MINNESOTA WILD rookie forward Luke Kunin underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL is in left knee and will be out 6-7 months.
WEDNESDAY’S GAME
SENATORS 4, SABRES 2: Matt Duchene scored his 27th goal and Ottawa won at Buffalo, New York, to assure the Sabres of finishing last in the NHL standings.
Max McCormick, Ryan Dzingel and Alexander Burrows, with an empty-netter, also scored for the Senators in a matchup between two of the NHL’s worst teams.
Ryan O’Reilly and Kyle Okposo scored for the Sabres, who became the first team to finish 31st, following the addition of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.
