A Biddeford man was sentenced Monday to seven years in prison for robbing a credit union in Arundel last year.

Glenn Brackett, 49, of Biddeford also was ordered to undergo three years of supervised release during his sentencing in U.S. District Court in Portland by Judge George Z. Singal, U.S. Attorney Halsey B. Frank said in a statement.

Brackett entered the Infiniti Federal Credit Union in Arundel on Aug. 16, 2017, approached a teller with his hand hidden in a sock to make it look like he was armed, and ordered the teller “to give him everything,” court documents say.

The teller handed over $4,460 and placed a GPS tracking device in the bag that Brackett gave her to fill, according to court documents. Brackett fled the credit union, leaving the scene in a motor vehicle. Police responded to the area of the robbery and noticed him speeding away after he spotted their cruisers.

Police located his abandoned vehicle behind a local business. Officers tracked him into the woods behind the business and arrested him, recovering the money he had stolen and hidden under a log.

Brackett later told police that he “was so drunk that he did not remember anything about what happened that day.”

Court sentencing documents filed by his attorney said that Brackett, who was born and raised in Biddeford, had a troubled childhood after learning at the age of 9 that he was adopted. The discovery led to a lifelong battle with alcoholism that his attorney said fueled his criminal behavior.

Brackett also was arrested in 2010 after he stole more than $3,000 from a Biddeford branch of the PeoplesChoice Credit Union. At the time, Brackett was a transient who had been staying at a Biddeford motel. He served three years.

The investigation into the Arundel robbery was conducted by the Biddeford Police Department, the York County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.
