Police in Bath charged a man with drug possession after they were called to a Union Street address for a report of a man who was shot.

When officers arrived around 7:19 p.m., they found a 29-year-old man outside with a gunshot wound to his leg.

With the victim was 22-year-old Anthony Alvarez, but neither the victim nor Alvarez would say how the man was shot.

While the victim was transported to Mid Coast Hospital by Bath Rescue to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, police searched Alvarez, who was in possession of prescription medication believed to be morphine, police said.

Alvarez was arrested and charged with felony unlawful possession of drugs.

After interviewing other witnesses, investigators determined that Alvarez accidentally shot his companion in the leg while handling a handgun inside a Union Street apartment.

Police recovered the handgun used in the accidental shooting, as well as another handgun, both of which were owned by Alvarez.

Alvarez was booked into jail and released on $1,000 unsecured bail. He is due to appear in West Bath District Court July 17.

Further charges related to the shooting may be filed later, police said.
