A Pittsfield man pleaded guilty to a charge that he provided false information during the purchase of firearms and that he was really buying the weapons for a different person.
According to a press release from United States Attorney Halsey Frank, Steven Springer Jr., 25, pleaded guilty on May 29 in District Court to the charge. According to court records, on Feb. 22, 2015, Springer purchased a semi-automatic pistol from a federally licensed firearms dealer. Springer had to complete a Firearms Transaction Record form, in which he falsely reported he was the actual person buying the weapon.
Two days later, Springer purchased two more semi-automatic pistols from another licensed dealer, again falsely reporting he was the actual buyer. On both occasions, Springer was buying the guns for someone else who was prohibited from purchasing firearms.
Springer faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release. He will be sentenced after a pre-sentence investigation is completed by the U.S. Probation Office.
The Massachusetts State Police and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated this case.
