HALLOWELL — The Harlow invites artists to submit artwork to be considered for “Tactile,” an open call juried exhibition of art incorporating processes traditionally used in the field of textiles, according to a news release from the gallery. Tactile will be on view Sept. 7-29 at the gallery at 100 Water St.

Submissions will be juried by gallery staff as well as artists and/or collectors with interest in textile art. The deadline for email submissions is 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1.

“Tactile” will pay homage to the decorative, domestic and utilitarian roots of textile art, while emphasizing the application of textile techniques for the purpose of communication and expression. Such techniques include (but are not limited to) stitching, weaving, knitting, crocheting, pleating and felting. Tactile aims to feature work both large and small, two-dimensional or three-dimensional, abstract and representational, made of synthetic as well as natural materials, made by hand as well as by machine, “pure” textile as well as mixed with other media.

Artists should be Maine residents, at least part of the year or otherwise have a strong connection to the state. Artists submitting from out of state are responsible for the costs of shipping work to and from the Harlow. Please note that return shipping will be actual cost plus $20 to cover staff time. Artists may submit to four pieces. Diptychs and triptychs will be considered and judged as one entry. Work previously shown at the Harlow is not eligible. Works submitted should preferably have been created within the last five years.
