AUGUSTA — There will be no contested local races on the ballot for Augusta voters to decide in November.

Nomination papers for Augusta City Council, Board of Education, and mayor were due by the end of the day Thursday, in order for candidates to have their names on the November ballot.

Only one candidate took out papers for each position up for election, according to City Clerk Roberta Fogg. That means that other than a possible challenge by a write-in candidate if one comes forward, there will be no contested races. However, there shouldn’t be any positions that go unfilled, either.

Mayor David Rollins filed papers to retain his position at the city’s highest-ranking elected official. Rollins, first elected in 2014 to serve the remaining year left on former Mayor William Stokes’ term, is seeking his second full term as mayor.

Political newcomer Kevin Judkins took out papers to run for the Ward 2 spot on the City Council, currently held by Councilor Darek Grant, who will be forced out of the seat by the city’s term limits.

Incumbent At-large Councilor Marci Alexander will be unchallenged in her bid for a second term on the council.

Michael Michaud was the only candidate to file for the Ward 3 school board seat, currently held by April Cusick, who did not take out papers seeking a second term.

Incumbent Pia Holmes, elected last year as a write-in candidate to an at-large term that expires this year, is seeking to retain one of the two available at-large spots on the school board. Holmes was filling the remaining time of a position previously held by Laura Hamilton, who resigned in 2016.

Kevin Lamoreau, who ran against Holmes and two other candidates for the at-large spot won by Holmes last year, was the only other candidate to take out papers to seek to fill one of the two at-large school board positions up for election in November. In addition to Holmes’ at-large position, the other at-large spot is held by Tom Connors, who is not seeking re-election.
