University of New England College of Dental Medicine students Stephanie Beeckel, of Augusta, and James R. Cormier, of Clinton, were among 11 students selected to receive the 2018 Alva S. Appleby Scholarship from the Maine Dental Association Charitable Foundation, according to a news release from the American Dental Association.

Beeckel, a graduate of Cony High School in Augusta, is a member of the class of 2020 at the UNE College of Dental Medicine who also received her bachelor’s degree from the University of New England. She traveled to Ecuador in 2013 and Peru in 2014 with groups of students from UNE for medical missions, has been president of the UNE Pre-Dental Club, serves on the UNE College of Dental Medicine/UNE Undergrad Mentorship Committee, and is secretary of the UNE chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry.

She is the daughter of Thomas and Lisa Beeckel, of Augusta.

Cormier, a graduate of Lawrence High School in Fairfield, is a member of the class of 2019 at the University of New England College of Dental Medicine who received his bachelor’s degree from the University of New England.

He is an avid, lifelong outdoorsman and sportsman, and is the son of James A. Cormier and Silke Cormier, of Clinton.

Each of the students were awarded $5,000.

To be considered for the annual Appleby Scholarship, a student must be a Maine resident, have completed their first year of dental school, and be enrolled in a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association.
