In our last election for president, the candidate who got the most votes nationally did not win. This has happened in prior years also. Now, in this legislative session, we Mainers have the opportunity to address this with L.D. 816 by joining with other states in the National Popular Vote Compact.

The combined votes of compact states can defend against what happens now, which is that votes cast by convention delegates may not be for the candidate that represents the majority of voters nationally. Already 12 states have passed this identical legislation, and more, like Maine, are considering joining.

It’s time that we voters take action to see that our choice for president gets elected, before 2020. L.D. 816 changes the apparatus of the Electoral College, an apparatus that’s defined our elections far too long. Please let your voice be heard on this important issue.
