FARMINGTON — A Strong man is accused of drugging a woman and then raping her in April in Franklin County.

When the alleged victim regained consciousness, she was wearing different clothing, in a car on a snowmobile or ATV trail and did not know where she was, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said Monday.

Christopher J. Burnham, 31, who is believed to be a transient, Nichols said, was arrested on a felony charge of gross sexual assault and misdemeanor charge violation of conditions of release.

The woman told police Burnham gave her a Twisted Tea alcoholic beverage while she was at a friend’s residence. She said that after she drank it, her memory of the evening was limited.

The rape was reported April 22 to Officer Troy Reed of the Livermore Falls Police Department, who later determined the alleged rape happened in a Franklin County town. He turned the investigation over to Detective Kenneth Charles of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

At Reed’s recommendation, the woman went to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston and had a sexual assault examination, according to court documents.

On April 25, the woman applied for and was granted a temporary order for protection at Lewiston District Court.

Charles applied and received a warrant for the arrest of Burnham on Wednesday.

Burnham was arrested Friday. He then appeared before a judge who set his bail at $20,000 cash.

Burnham remained Monday at the Franklin County Detention Center on Farmington, according to a corrections officer there.

A conviction on the sexual assault charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, while the release violation carries a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Burnham is scheduled to appear in a Farmington court Aug. 7.

Among his release conditions, Burnham is not to go to a specific address in Lewiston and not have any form of contact with the victim.
