American Airlines will expand its seasonal weekly flight service from Portland to Miami and begin offering year-round flights in June.

Saturday flight service between Portland International Jetport and Miami International Airport will convert to a year-round route on June 5, according to a news release issued Tuesday by the jetport.

American initially planned the weekly flights for winter only but decided to expand the service, Portland Airport Director Paul Bradbury said. The airline, the jetport’s largest carrier, last year added flights from Portland to Dallas/Ft. Worth. American offers a total of seven nonstop flight destinations from Portland.

“We are once again pleased that our airline partners continue to put resources into our market,” Bradbury said in a statement.

The flights will run every Saturday, leaving Miami in the morning and departing from Portland in the afternoon.

Tuesday’s announcement followed a similar one Monday by Delta Air Lines, which said it plans to offer daily nonstop service between Portland and Minneapolis/St. Paul starting this spring.
