University of Maine senior Maeve Carroll will return for a fifth season next winter, Coach Amy Vachon announced Tuesday.
Carroll is eligible to return for a fifth year due to the NCAA’s ruling to give winter sports athletes who compete during the 2020-21 season an extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic.
Carroll has appeared in 12 games this season, averaging 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
“We are thrilled that Maeve has chosen to pursue her master’s degree in business and return to our program for a fifth-year,” Vachon said. “Maeve has developed into one of the best players in the conference and we are excited that she will be back to help lead a young team next year.”
• Louisville was set to resume basketball activities with an afternoon practice in preparation for Thursday night’s Atlantic Coast Conference game at Pittsburgh.
The third-ranked Cardinals’ game on Sunday was postponed after a positive COVID-19 test by a Tier 1 staff member. Louisville (19-1, 12-1) underwent subsequent quarantining and contact tracing and adhered to ACC medical protocols.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Boston College’s game at Georgia Tech scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed due to the continued quarantines and contact tracing within the Boston College program. No makeup date has been announced.
The postponement delays the debut of Scott Spinelli as the Eagles’ interim coach. The school fired coach Jim Christian on Monday. Athletic Director Pat Kraft said Spinelli, who had been an assistant, will coach the remainder of the season. Boston College is 3-13 overall and 1-9 in the ACC.
• No. 2 Baylor is set to resume the season Feb. 23 following a six-game hiatus that started because of COVID-19 protocols and there is plenty of uncertainty over the rest of the regular season.
The Bears are scheduled to play Iowa State at home after the Big 12 announced the postponement of Saturday’s home game against Oklahoma State. The conference didn’t specify whether the Oklahoma State postponement was over COVID-19 issues or the wintry weather affecting Texas.
Baylor hasn’t played since matching the best start in school history at 17-0 with an 83-69 win over No. 12 Texas on Feb. 2. If the current schedule holds, the Bears (9-0 in the Big 12) will go three weeks between games.
BASEBALL
MLB: The Boston Red Sox signed Japanese right-hander Hirokazu Sawamura to a two-year contract.
Sawamura joins the Red Sox after a 10-year stint in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league. He went 48-52 with 75 saves, four shutouts, a 2.77 ERA and 790 strikeouts in 352 appearances (88 starts).
The deal has a dual club and player option for the 2023 season. Boston made room on the 40-man roster by designating left-hander Jeffrey Springs for assignment.
Sawamura would become the ninth player born in Japan to play for Boston.
• The Atlanta Braves beat Dansby Swanson in salary arbitration, and the shortstop will earn $6 million rather than his request for $6.7 million.
Arbitrators Richard Bloch, Walt De Treaux, Robert Herman made the decision Tuesday, a day after hearing arguments.
The 27-year-old Swanson hit .274 with 10 homers and 35 RBI last season in an NL-high 237 at-bats. He earned $1,666,667 in prorated pay from a $3.15 million salary.
Teams have won four of seven cases, with Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ and San Francisco second baseman Donovan Solano remaining scheduled for hearings this week.
Atlanta pitcher Mike Soroka ($2.8 million) won, as did St. Louis pitcher Jack Flaherty ($3.9 million) and Tampa Bay first baseman Ji-Man Choi ($2.45 million).
Rays reliever Ryan Yarbrough ($2.3 million), New York Mets third baseman/outfielder J.D. Davis ($2.1 million) and Baltimore outfielder Anthony Santander ($2.1 million) lost.
• Right-hander Mike Fiers is staying put with the Oakland Athletics, finalizing his agreement on a $3.5 million, one-year contract.
Fiers, whose six wins were a team-best in 2020, reported to the club’s spring training facility in Mesa, Arizona, on Tuesday and passed a physical.
• Right-hander Corey Oswalt cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Syracuse by the New York Mets, who also released right-hander Brad Brach.
Brach, a 34-year-old who was designated for assignment last week, is guaranteed a $2,075,000 salary under the player option he exercised after last season.
Oswalt, 27, will attend major league spring training as a non-roster player.
• Two-time All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis is one of 25 non-roster players who have been invited by the Atlanta Braves to spring training.
Kipnis agreed to a minor league contract with Atlanta after hitting .237 in 44 games with his hometown Chicago Cubs in 2020 following nine seasons with Cleveland.
The 33-year-old Kipnis was an All-Star with Cleveland in 2013 and 2015. He has a career .260 batting average. In 2019, his last season with the Indians, he hit .245 with 17 homers and 65 RBI.
• Bullpen coach Matt Wise will serve as the Los Angeles Angels’ interim pitching coach, replacing the suspended Mickey Callaway.
New Angels executive Dom Chiti will fill in as Manager Joe Maddon’s bullpen coach while the investigation of Callaway is concluded.
Callaway, the former New York Mets manager and Cleveland pitching coach, is being investigated by Major League Baseball over allegations of inappropriate behavior toward several women who work in sports media.
• The Indians could be adding another veteran arm to their bullpen after signing Blake Parker to a minor league contract on Tuesday.
Parker’s deal includes an invitation to training camp in Arizona, where Cleveland will try to upgrade its relief corps to complement a solid starting staff.
The 35-year-old Parker spent the past two seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. In 14 games last season, the right-hander went 3-0 with a 2.81 ERA. He has also pitched for the Cubs, Mariners, Yankees, Angels and Twins in eight major league seasons.
• The Texas Rangers have acquired right-hander Josh Sborz from the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor league pitcher Jhan Zambrano.
The trade was announced Tuesday, five days after the Dodgers designated Sborz for assignment while signing free agent ace Trevor Bauer. The Rangers designated right-hander Jimmy Herget for assignment.
The 27-year-old Sborz made four relief appearances over four stints with the Dodgers in 2020. He allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings. Sborz didn’t pitch in the postseason for the World Series champions.
AUTO RACING
FORMULA ONE: Longtime racing announcer Bob Jenkins said he plans to scale back his work at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this May as he undergoes radiation and chemotherapy treatment for brain cancer.
The 73-year-old Jenkins made the announcement near the end of a 24-minute video posted on the speedway’s YouTube account.
In it, Jenkins explained how he woke up with a severe headache on Christmas night and drove to a hospital. Doctors initially thought Jenkins had suffered a stroke, but a further examination revealed two malignant tumors in his right temple.
SOCCER
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane pounced on defensive mistakes to score Liverpool’s goals in a 2-0 win over Leipzig in the Champions League, giving the six-time European champions some respite amid an alarming slump in form domestically.
The Champions League is the only trophy Liverpool can win this season after dropping out of the Premier League title race unexpectedly early, and Jurgen Klopp’s side is already in sight of the quarterfinals after being given a helping hand from Leipzig.
Kylian Mbappé scored a hat trick as Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to rout Barcelona 4-1 in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday.
• Lionel Messi put Barcelona in front by converting a first-half penalty but Mbappé led PSG’s comeback in the absence of the injured Neymar. In the teams’ first meeting since Barcelona’s memorable 6-1 victory to reverse a 4-0 loss at the same stage nearly four years ago, PSG again built a big first-leg advantage.
Mbappé scored five minutes after Messi’s opener and added two second-half goals to become the first player to score an away hat trick at the Camp Nou Stadium in the Champions League since Andriy Shevchenko for Dynamo Kyiv in a 4-0 win in 1997.
