Winthrop came out firing in Wednesday night’s Class C/D central Maine girls basketball tournament opener against Valley, scoring 20 points in the opening quarter on its way to a resounding 58-26 victory in Winthrop.

Sage Fortin scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter, when the third-seeded Ramblers jumped out to a 20-7 lead.

“I think, offensively, Sage definitely stood out,” Winthrop co-coach Kelsey Ouellette said. “She was not only strong offensively, like making her shots and driving, but also playing very smart, pulling the ball out when she’s 1-on-4, just making good decisions.”

Maddie Perkins added five of her 14 in the opening frame, with another seven of those coming in the fourth quarter.

Madison Forgue had eight, with a basket in each quarter.

“She has a really good presence on the court,” Ouellette said. “She’s just one of our leaders out on the court, being able to calm everyone down.”

Winthrop had eight different scorers, including seven in the first half, which the hosts ended with a 37-9 lead.

“In practice the past few days we’ve really worked on taking our time and finding the open looks on offense, rotating the ball multiple times, and the girls looked really good today doing that,” Ramblers co-coach Jess Merrill said. “So it’s good momentum moving forward and good confidence-booster for them.”

Ouellette praised Lydia Rice’s defensive presence, which helped hold the sixth-seeded Cavaliers to eight made field goals. Logan McDonald led Valley with 12 points and Molly Hay added nine.

Winthrop advances to the tournament semifinals, where it will face either No. 2 Carrebec or No. 7 Madison. Those two teams match up on Thursday.

“We’ve got a couple days now to prep for either team, so we’ll be ready for both,” Ouellette said.
