PHILADELPHIA — Rasmus Asplund and Jeff Skinner scored 25 seconds apart late in the third period to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-3 comeback victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.
Arttu Ruotsalainen, Sam Reinhart and Casey Mittelstadt also scored for the Sabres, who improved their NHL-worst record to 10-25-6.
Buffalo appeared headed for another defeat before a late rally. Skinner tied the game at 3 with 3:03 remaining. Flyers goalie Carter Hart couldn’t corral Victor Olofsson’s shot from long range, and the puck went off Skinner’s skate and over the goal line as he crashed the net. The goal was upheld after an officials’ review.
Asplund scored the go-ahead goal just seconds later when he scored on a rebound with a backhand from close range.
Middlestadt’s empty-netter capped the scoring.
Linus Ullmark made 40 saves for Buffalo.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS 1, COYOTES 0: Marc-Andre Fleury tied Ed Belfour for fourth in NHL history with 484 wins, making 14 saves in a win at Las Vegas.
Fleury also moved into a tie for 15th with Patrick Roy with 66 shutouts. He snapped a season-high three-game losing streak and improved to 3-0 against Arizona this season.
Tomas Nosek scored the only goal.
AVALANCHE 4, DUCKS 1: Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and an assist to extend his points streak to nine games and help Colorado win at Anaheim.
Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and two assists, Ryan Graves and Andre Burakovsky also scored, and Jonas Johansson made 24 saves. The Avalanche have won seven of eight, They went 6-1-1 in the season series against Anaheim.
PENGUINS 5, DEVILS 2: Colton Sceviour scored two quick goals just hours after coming off waivers, and Pittsburgh rolled to a win at Newark, New Jersey.
ISLANDERS 3, RANGERS 2: Ryan Pulock scored 1:13 into overtime and the Islanders won at home.
Kyle Palmieri and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored in the first period for the Islanders, who are 18-2-2 at home. Mathew Barzal had two assists.
PREDATORS 3, STARS 2: Ryan Johansen was the lone scorer in the shootout as Nashville won at home.
Ryan Ellis and Yakov Trenin scored in regulation for Nashville, which has won four of five.
NOTES
CANUCKS: Vancouver’s facilities, scheduled to open Sunday, will remain closed until at least Monday after an additional player entered the league’s COVID-19 protocol.
The league says the player has not been around the team since March 31, but the decision was still made to push back the reopening of the Canucks’ facilities. The league added it doesn’t believe this will endanger Vancouver resuming the season Friday.
The Canucks haven’t played since March 24 after a COVID-19 outbreak caused 21 players and four staff members to test positive. They had 19 players on the protocol list Saturday.
CAPITALS: Henrik Lundqvist is abandoning a long-shot attempt to return from open-heart surgery in time to play for Washington this season after a checkup last week showed some inflammation.
Lundqvist tweeted that the inflammation around his heart requires a few months of rest and recovery. The 39-year-old goaltender had set the goal for himself of trying to join the Capitals before the end of the season.
TRADES: The Columbus Blue Jackets traded captain Nick Foligno to the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of a three-team deal.
Columbus receives a 2021 first- and 2022 fourth-round pick from Toronto and retains half of Foligno’s $5.5 million salary-cap hit. The San Jose Sharks get a 2021 fourth-rounder from Toronto for taking 25% of Foligno’s salary.
Toronto also gets forward Stefan Noesen from San Jose.
• Montreal acquired veteran defenseman Jon Merrill from Detroit for a fifth-round draft pick in 2021 and minor-league forward Hayden Verbeek.
Merrill appeared in 36 games with the Red Wings in 2020-21, picking up five assists while averaging nearly 20 minutes of ice time.
• New Jersey acquired defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler from Washington for a 2021 third-round pick.
Washington clears $800,000 in salary-cap space before the trade deadline Monday by dealing one of the eight defensemen on its active roster. New Jersey gets a 23-year-old left shot on the blue line for its rebuilding efforts.
PREDATORS: Forward Michael McCarron was suspended two games for an illegal check to the head of Tampa Bay’s Yanni Gourde.
McCarron was given a match penalty for an illegal check to the head and thrown out of the game Saturday night. He struck Gourde in the head with his left shoulder with 26 seconds to go and the Lightning leading 3-0.
