Josh Berry passed Ty Gibbs with 28 laps to go and pulled away for his first career Xfinity Series victory in a rain-delayed race at Martinsville Speedway.
Berry gave himself enough cushion after getting by Gibbs to withstand challenges by Noah Gragson and Daniel Hemric, who ran out of time trying to navigate lapped traffic.
Berry, making just his 13th career start spread over five seasons and eight years, became the second driver to gain his first win on the 0.526-mile oval, joining Brett Bodine (1985). Berry’s best prior finish was seventh earlier this year at Las Vegas.
TENNIS
MONTE CARLO MASTERS: David Goffin beat an erratic Marin Cilic 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 to reach the second round of the clay-court tournament in Monaco.
Although the 2014 U.S. Open champion Cilic had 10 aces and led the match 3-0, he made 52 unforced errors and also dropped serve six times against the 11th-seeded Belgian.
It was the ninth meeting between them. Goffin leads 5-4.
The day’s only other match lasted three hours as Australian player Jordan Thompson overcame Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5) in an error-strewn match with 17 service breaks.
SARDEGNA OPEN: Lorenzo Sonego became the first Italian in 15 years to capture an ATP tour clay-court title on home soil, fighting back to beat Laslo Djere of Serbia in the final in Cagliari, Sardinia.
Third-seeded Sonego had to dig deep in the second set before prevailing 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in a final that last just over three hours.
VOLVO CAR OPEN: Veronika Kudermetova of Russia won her first WTA title, beating Danka Kovinic 6-4, 6-2 in Charleston, South Carolina.
The 23-year-old Kudermetova did not drop a set in six matches on the way to the championship at the season’s first clay-court tournament – a feat last accomplished at this even by Serena Williams in 2012.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: Edinson Cavani set up Fred’s equalizer before scoring with a diving header as Manchester United beat Tottenham, 3-1, strengthening its grip on second place in the Premier League.
• Jesse Lingard took his goal tally to eight in nine appearances since joining West Ham on loan from Manchester United, scoring twice in a 3-2 victory over Leicester.
West Ham moved back into fourth place, just one point behind third-place Leicester.
• Allan Saint-Maximin came off the bench to inspire Newcastle to a 2-1 victory at Burnley that lifted the team six points clear of the relegation zone.
ITALY: Inter Milan continued the march to its first Serie A title in more than a decade as it beat relegation-threatened Cagliari, 1-0.
Defender Matteo Darmian scored in the 77th minute as Inter restored its 11-point advantage over second-place AC Milan, which won 3-1 at Parma on Saturday.
SPAIN: Atletico Madrid stumbled again in its bid to win a first league title in seven seasons, drawing 1-1 at Real Betis.
Atletico edged one point ahead of defending champion Real Madrid and two ahead of Barcelona.
SWIMMING
PRO SWIM SERIES: Katie Ledecky won the 1,500-meter freestyle in Mission Viejo, California with the world’s fastest time this year.
She touched in 15 minutes, 40.55 seconds in the outdoor pool. Ashley Twichell finished second in 16:06.68.
Ledecky set the world record of 15:20.48 in 2018.
