UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Josh Bailey scored twice, Anthony Beauvillier had a goal and three assists, and the New York Islanders beat the Rangers 6-1 Tuesday night.

Jordan Eberle and Jean-Gabriel Pageau each had a goal and an assist, and Brock Nelson also scored. Semyon Varlamov stopped 25 shots to help the Islanders win their second straight and seventh in the last 10 to pull into a tie with Washington atop the East Division ahead of a stretch of three straight games against the Capitals.

Kevin Rooney scored for the Rangers, who had won four straight – all against New Jersey – and lost in regulation for just the second time in 12 games (8-2-2). Igor Shesterkin finished with 22 saves to fall to 0-3-1 in four career starts against the Islanders.

The Islanders took a 3-1 lead into the third and scored three times in a 3:38 span midway through the period to put the game away.

Pageau fired a one-timer into the top right corner off a pass from Beauvillier for his 13th of the season at 7:44 to give the Islanders a three-goal lead.

Beauvillier then set up Bailey for a one timer from nearly the same spot with 9:44 left. It was Bailey’s second of the game and eighth of the season.

After a Rangers turnover, Travis Zajac brought the puck up the left side on a two-on-one and passed it to Eberle, who beat Shesterkin for his 15th to make it 6-1 just 1:06 later.

The Islanders, who scored just two goals while losing 2 of 3 on their trip, improved to 19-2-2 at home this season. The Rangers, 4-0-2 in their last six on the road, were 9-1-2 in their last 12 games at the Nassau Coliseum.

Leading 1-0 after 20 minutes, the Islanders scored twice in a 4:07 span early in the second period to pad their advantage.

Nelson tipped Nick Leddy’s centering pass in front past Shesterkin for his team-leading 16th of the season at 1:38. With the Islanders on their third power play of the game, Beauvillier then scored from the right circle off a pass from Noah Dobson to make it 3-0 at 5:45.

The Rangers scored with just under nine minutes left in the second as Brendan Smith’s shot from the right point deflected off Rooney’s stick and past Varlamov for his seventh.

Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba was helped off the ice and to the dressing room midway through the first period after taking a hard hit in the corner from the Islanders’ Matt Martin. Trouba stumbled as he got up and fell back to the ice. Moments earlier, Trouba had leveled Martin with a hard hit near the sideboards. The Rangers later announced Trouba would not return to the game.

PANTHERS 5, BLUE JACKETS 1: Sam Bennett scored two goals and Spencer Knight made 33 saves in his NHL debut to lift Florida at home.

Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and two assists, Aleksander Barkov scored his first goal in four games, and Ryan Lomberg also scored a goal for Florida. Anthony Duclair had three assists. The Panthers are 7-0-1 against the Blue Jackets this season.

Knight, out of Boston College and the 13th overall pick in the NHL draft, made his start one day after his 20th birthday.

PENGUINS 7, DEVILS 6: Jeff Carter picked up his first goal in Pittsburgh as part of a first-period deluge and the Penguins held on to win at home.

Pittsburgh led 6-0 entering the third before the Devils put together a furious rally. Andreas Johnsson pulled New Jersey within one with 41 seconds remaining but the Devils couldn’t generate another shot with the goaltender pulled.

Carter, acquired from Los Angeles at last week’s trade deadline to give the Penguins depth, speed and a dash of grit as the playoffs loom, beat Scott Wedgewood with a blast from between the circles that finished off a four-goal opening period.
Bryan Rust, Mike Matheson and Brian Dumoulin of Biddeford also scored in the first for Pittsburgh, which bounced back from a dismal loss to Buffalo on Sunday night to move within a point of Washington and the New York Islanders for first place in the East Division.

Sidney Crosby and Evan Rodrigues both had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. Jared McCann added two assists to give him 15 points in his last 14 games.

HURRICANES 4, LIGHTNING 1: Nino Niedereitter, Jordan Staal and Steven Lorentz scored second-period goals to lead visiting Carolina over Tampa Bay.

Carolina remains tied for first place in the Central Division with the Florida Panthers. The Hurricanes have played two fewer games.

Florida and Carolina open a two-game set on Thursday in Sunrise, Florida.

Jordan Martinook added an empty net goal with 2.2 seconds left. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 26 shots for the victory.

NOTES

CANADIENS: Goaltender Carey Price will be out at least a week because of concussion protocols.

Price was injured in the first period of Montreal’s 4-1 loss to Edmonton on Monday following a bump by Oilers forward Alex Chiasson. Jake Allen came on to start the second period and played the remainder of the game.

AVALANCHE: Star right winger Mikko Rantanen was added to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol absence list.

Rantanen joins goaltender Phillipp Grubauer and winger Joonas Donskoi on the list.

The Avs have been shut down since Donskoi went on the list last week and are tentatively scheduled to return to action Thursday night at St. Louis.
