GORHAM — Kaitlyn Nelson capped a two-run rally in the seventh inning with a two-out RBI double, giving Southern Maine a 7-6 win over Eastern Connecticut State in the first game of a doubleheader between Little East Conference softball leaders Sunday afternoon.

USM’s 15-game winning streak ended in Game 2, however, as ECSU (22-2, 10-2 Little East) withstood a seventh-inning comeback bid by the Huskies (25-2-1, 11-1) for a 6-3 victory.

In Game 1, Alexis Brown and Rona Scott each drove in two runs for USM, which overcame a 5-2 deficit.

UMBC 3, MAINE 2: Courtney Coppersmith pitched a two-hitter and Sierra Pierce smacked a two-run homer for the Retrievers (20-10, 9-4 America East) in a win over the Black Bears (11-19, 7-8) in Baltimore, Maryland.

BATES, TRINITY SPLIT: Lindsey Kim went 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI, and Cassidy Musco and winning pitcher Payton Buxton also drove in two runs apiece as Bates (2-10) earned a doubleheader split with an 11-2 victory at home against Trinity (4-8), after losing 18-1 in Game 1.

ALBANY SWEEPS MAINE: Marc Wangenstein’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Great Danes (15-18, 13-13 America East) a 4-3 win and a doubleheader sweep over the Black Bears (15-14, 10-11) in Albany, New York.

Sean Lawlor homered and drove in five runs for Maine in a 23-11 loss in Game 1.

COLBY 12, BATES 4: Andrew Russell’s two-run single highlighted a six-run rally in the fourth inning, propelling the Mules (10-10) to a win over the Bobcats (1-5) in Waterville.

Brady O’Brien and Caleb Jung also drove in two runs apiece.

Kevin Lucey hit a solo home run for Bates.
