Do you think the state of Maine should regulate or prohibit obscene vanity license plates? If so, how far should the state go?
Secretary of State Shenna Bellows recently testified before the Legislature in support of new limits on license plates, saying some adjustments may be necessary to prevent a successful court challenge under the First Amendment. Bellows reasons that license plates are state property, so the government has a legitimate interest in regulating speech contained on them to prevent vulgar or offensive language.
But do you think the state should take such steps? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
