Rep. Laurel Libby says, “This is war,” referring to her fight against vaccine mandates (“Maine lawmaker insists ‘this is war’ to block vaccine mandates,” Aug. 18). Libby is too young to have seen the horrors and ravages of the many diseases that have been largely eliminated from our society by vaccines. Polio stands out strongly in my memories among the many.

Yes, we are at war, but the enemy is COVID-19. Yes, the vaccines were developed rapidly, and while their safety and efficacy have been demonstrated clearly for the short term, there may be some long-term risks that have yet to be discovered.

However, as a combat veteran I will say that war requires risk and sacrifice. Taking the COVID-19 vaccine is not just an individual choice for self protection; it is also taking a risk for the greater good of a whole society. It may require both courage and altruism to take the COVID-19 accine. We may still have a chance to beat this enemy if we stop fighting amongst ourselves!
