LEWISTON — A 21-year-old Augusta man was hospitalized after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a utility pole and he slid into a second one Friday during a police pursuit.
Authorities said the man, whose name was not released, was traveling outbound on Sabattus Street shortly before 3 a.m. Friday, when he was speeding at more than 30 mph over the posted limit, prompting an Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office deputy to attempt to pull him over.
The man fled, then lost control of the motorcycle after cresting a hill at 809 Sabattus St., in the area of a Pizza Hut, Androscoggin County sheriff’s Maj. Mark Cornelio said Tuesday.
After the man and motorcycle struck the pole, he slid along the roadway and struck a second pole, Cornelio said.
The man was taken to Central Maine Medical Center where he was in stable condition and expected to undergo surgery for a serious leg injury, Cornelio said.
The crash remains under investigation.
A deputy is planning to submit a search warrant for the man’s blood alcohol content at the time of the crash, Cornelio said.
He said he expects several charges to be lodged against the rider.
