For the seventh year in a row, attorney Walt McKee has received the AV Rating from Martindale Hubbell, and has been selected for 2021 for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America.

McKee’s AV-Preeminent rating, earned under a peer-review process, is considered to be a mark of professional excellence. Attorneys receive the AV-Preeminent rating when they have have demonstrated top levels of legal knowledge, communication skills, and ethical standards.

McKee has also been named a New England SuperLawyer for 2021. SuperLawyers is a national lawyer rating service that rates the country’s top lawyers.

McKee is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, is the past chair of the Maine Ethics Commission, and previously served as president of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is a veteran of over 200 jury trials.

Dr. Jonathan Herland hired as pain management specialist

Northern Light Inland Hospital in Waterville has hired Dr. Jonathan Herland, an interventional pain management specialist.

Herland earned his medical degree at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His residency was in anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a pain management fellowship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Herland received his bachelor’s degree in applied biology at M.I.T. His interest in human capabilities led him to earn a Doctor of Science in exercise physiology at Boston University.

He moved to Maine in 2000, where he now focuses on providing pain management services to underserved rural communities such as Waterville and Pittsfield.

Belgrade Regional Health Center has taken on a new connector, Melissa Martin. Martin will help patients access services such as affordable healthcare and  health insurances.

Martin earned her associate’s degree in business management from Eastern Maine Technical College, and her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Husson College. She has experience in patient case management, community outreach, and connecting patients to energy, housing, health, and other services.

Northern Light Primary Care in Newport has hired Elizabeth “Beth” Baratta, MD as a team member at the Newport Plaza practice.

Baratta is a primary care physician who treats patients of all ages. She is especially interested in helping make healthcare as accessible as possible to everyone and understanding the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes.

Most recently, Baratta completed her residency at the Center for Family Medicine in Bangor, as well as a fellowship with the Center’s inaugural Arts & Humanities in Medicine program. She earned her medical education from University of Massachusetts in Worcester and is eligible for certification by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Maine outdoor startups receive MTI funding

Three outdoor recreation startups in Maine have received a total of $76,000 of funding from the Maine Technology Institute. Each startup is a graduate of the Waterville-based Tortoise Labs product design course.

Tortoise Labs helps entrepreneurs connect with customers, build software prototypes, and bring products to market. It has partnered with entrepreneurship development organizations including the CEI Women’s Business Center, the Machias Valley Center for Entrepreneurship, Thomas College, Bricks Coworking & Innovation Center, and the Bill & Joan Alfond Foundation.

SledTRX, an online snowmobile trip planning platform, was the winner of the Greenlight Maine pitch competition and received MTI funding of $16,000 for app development. Tree Free Fire, a manufacturer of all-natural portable campfires and a finalist in Greenlight Maine, got $20,000 for an unspecified development project. Finally, Tidal-Bore received $40,000 to execute its plan for an AI-powered bicycle taillight that can detect dangerous drivers and help avoid collisions.
