WATERVILLE — Oakland resident Kristen Zoller stopped by the Quarry Road Trails Fall Festival on Saturday with her three sons, who enjoyed the variety of activities set up, but they couldn’t pick a favorite.

“We needed a nice activity outside for the kids, (to) get them out of the house. We want to maximize our time outside in the nice weather,” Zoller said.

The festival ran from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday and had a steady stream of people stopping by, including numerous families out with young kids.

Despite the brisk fall weather, the sun even made an appearance to warm up the festival.

Hanna Bouchard, who is on the board for Quarry Road Trails, helped organize the event and said she was pleased that the weather cooperated.

The activities at the festival included an apple sling shot, a story walk, pumpkin bowling and more. Waterville Creates set up a leaf art station and the public library set up cornhole and was using books as prizes. There was also a scavenger hunt for painted pine cones on one trail, and those who found one were entered into a raffle for a free winter skiing pass at the trails.

Bouchard said they had held the festival for several years, but were unable to last year with the pandemic. They decided to bring it back this fall, and just started planning it a month or two ago and Bouchard said she was especially pleased with how everything turned out given the quick turnaround.

The goal of the event was to get people out to the trails, Bouchard said, and early in the event she had already spoken with several people who had never been there before.

“We just wanted people to get out here and see the trail network,” Bouchard said. “I’ve already talked to like ten people today who were like ‘Oh, I’ve never been out here!'”

April Trenholm stopped by with her daughter and dog. They come by all the time, Trenholm said, so the activities are a bonus.

Rick Avila and his son came out from Augusta, as his wife was volunteering at the event. He said they were enjoying the weather, and his son said his favorite activity was the pumpkin painting.
