Monmouth Community Players plans to hold auditions next month for its first musical of the 2022 season, “The Addams Family.”

Auditions are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday, Feb. 6 and 7, in the lower level of Cumston Hall at 796 Main St. Auditions start with a closed singing audition, followed by a mini choreography audition, and end with cold reads. Sheet music will be provided for songs in the show.

Those singing a song from another show are asked to choose something with a similar style, and to bring sheet music to the audition. Song choices should be 16-32 bars, or a verse and a refrain, that show off vocal skills and range. All could hear about casting by Friday, Feb. 11.

This show was originally slated to be the final of MCP’s 2019-20 season, but was postponed because of the pandemic. It is being directed by Josie French of Lewiston, with music direction by Josh Caron of Lewiston and choreography by Emily Carlton of Fairfield.

In the kooky, upside-down world of the Addams Family, to be sad is to be happy, to feel pain is to feel joy, and death and suffering are the stuff of their dreams. Nonetheless, this quirky family still has to deal with many of the same challenges faced by any other family, and the spookiest nightmare faced by every family creates the focus in Lippa, Brickman, and Elice’s musical: the Addams kids are growing up.

The Addamses have lived by their unique values for hundreds of years, and Gomez and Morticia — the patriarch and matriarch of the clan — would be only too happy to continue living that way. Their dark, macabre, beloved daughter Wednesday, however, is now an 18-year-old young woman ready for a life of her own. She has fallen in love with Lucas Beineke, a sweet, smart boy from a normal, respectable Ohio family — the most un-Addams sounding person one could be. And to make matters worse, she has invited the Beinekes to their home for dinner.

In one fateful, hilarious night, secrets are disclosed, relationships are tested, and the Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change.

Rehearsals will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday, and from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Cast of characters:

• Wednesday Addams: Gomez and Morticia’s willful gothic daughter. Teen female lead, age 15-22, soprano, mezzo-soprano;

• Gomez Addams: The master of the house. A latin lover. Adult male lead, baritone, bass;

• Morticia Addams: The real master of the house. Fem-Fatale. Female Lead, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto;

• Alice Beineke: Repressed mother of Wednesday’s boyfriend Lucas. Adult female, soprano;

• Fester Addams: Morticia’s very strange uncle. Adult Male, Tenor or Baritone. Strong Character role;

• Pugsley Addams: The creepy little brother. Teen male, age 12-15, tenor;

• Mal Beineke: The boyfriend’s dorky dad. Adult male, tenor;

• Lucas Beineke: Wednesday’s straight-laced boyfriend. Older teen or young adult male;

Grandma Addams: The quirky grandmother. Adult female. Featured soprano. Strong character role;

• Lurch: The stoic house butler. adult Male. Featured bass;

• Cousin It: Non-speaking role, some dancing. Male or female; and

• Ancestors: Children and adults. Various vocal ranges; 12 to 14 total ensemble roles.
