STANDISH — St. Joseph of Connecticut closed the game with a 12-4 run to beat St. Joseph’s College 84-72 Thursday night in men’s basketball.

The Blue Jays (12-0, 7-0 GNAC) made six straight free throws down the stretch as they pulled away from the Monks (3-13, 2-6).

Ryan O’Neill had 21 points to lead five St. Joseph players in double figures. Jordan Powell had 20 points, Jaecee Martin added 14 and Chaylyn Martin and Tyree Mitchell tossed in 10 apiece.

Griffin Foley led the Monks with 27 points, and Julain Llopiz chipped in with 20 points and Nicholas Curtis had 19.

INDIANA 68, (4) PURDUE 65: Rob Phinisee scored a season-high 17 points in the first half and then made the decisive 3-pointer with 16.5 seconds left to send Indiana (14-4, 5-3 Big Ten) past visiting Purdue (15-3, 4-3).

Phinisee finished with a career-best 20 points as the Hoosiers snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series against their top rival and improved to 12-0 at home this season – sending fans streaming onto the court. Xavier Johnson added 18 points and Phinisee had four steals.

Jaden Ivey scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half for Purdue but missed two potential go-ahead shots in the final seven seconds, including a 3 at the buzzer.

(16) USC 61, COLORADO 58: Chevez Goodwin scored all 18 of his points in the second half and grabbed 14 rebounds, Max Agbonkpolo added 11 points and hit 3 of 4 free throws in the final 15 seconds, and visiting Southern California (15-2, 5-2 Pac-12) ended three years of frustration against Colorado (12-5, 4-3).

Isaiah Mobley had 13 points and six rebounds and Boogie Ellis overcame foul trouble to score 11 for the Trojans, who had dropped seven straight to the Buffaloes.

(21) PROVIDENCE 83, GEORGETOWN 75: Ed Croswell scored 15 points and Noah Horchler had 14 with seven rebounds to lead host Providence (15-2, 5-1 Big East) over Georgetown (6-9, 0-4).

Al Durham had 15 points and Nate Watson 10 for the Friars, who won for the 10th time in 11 games.

UCONN: An arbitrator has ruled that UConn improperly fired former men’s basketball coach Kevin Ollie and must pay him more than $11 million, Ollie’s lawyer said.

Attorney Jacques Parenteau called the ruling from arbitrator Mark Irvings a “total vindication” for Ollie, who was fired in the spring of 2018 after the school reported numerous NCAA violations in his program.

In 2019, UConn was placed on probation for two years and Ollie was sanctioned individually for those violations, which occurred between 2013 and 2018.

Parenteau said the arbitrator’s ruling shows that decision by the NCAA was “erroneous and unfounded.”

But the school said the ruling stated only that UConn should have waited for the NCAA’s decision before firing Ollie and said it strongly disagrees with that decision, saying it did not have “the luxury of waiting more than a year before terminating Ollie for the misconduct the university was aware he had engaged in.”

“The arbitrator’s decision is nonsensical and seriously impedes the university’s ability to manage its athletics program,” the university said in a statement. “It also sends a signal to other coaches in Connecticut that they may ignore NCAA rules with impunity and continue to be employed and paid.”

COVID-19: The Nebraska game at No. 19 Ohio State on Saturday has been postponed because of a COVID-19 outbreak in the Cornhuskers’ program.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

(4) NORTH CAROLINA STATE 68, (3) LOUISVILLE 59: Diamond Johnson scored 11 of her 16 points in a 4 1/2-minute stretch of the fourth quarter, and host North Carolina State (17-2, 8-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) wiped out a 16-point second-half deficit to beat Louisville (15-2, 5-1).

A 17-0 run in the fourth quarter ignited the Wolfpack to their third win against a top-10 opponent this season. Louisville’s 15-game winning streak, the longest in Division I, came to a halt.

(8) MICHIGAN 83, WISCONSIN 44: Naz Hillmon had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and host Michigan (16-2 overall, 7-1 Big Ten) beat Wisconsin (5-13, 1-6) for its fourth straight win.

OHIO STATE 95, (12) MARYLAND 89: Taylor Mikesell scored a career-high 33 points, Jacy Sheldon added 24 points with 10 assists and Ohio State (14-3, 6-2 Big Ten) beat visiting Maryland (12-6, 4-3).

Mikesell topped her previous high of 32, set against Illinois on Jan. 6, with two free throws in the closing seconds.

(13) GEORGIA 66, MISSISSIPPI STATE 63: Que Morrison scored 14 points, Mikayla Coombs added 13 and visiting Georgia (15-3, 4-2 Southeastern Conference) survived a late rally by Mississippi State (11-6, 2-3).

(18) GEORGIA TECH 65, SYRACUSE 55: Nerea Hermosa scored a career-high 21 points, Eylia Love had a double-double and visiting Georgia Tech (14-4, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) turned back Syracuse (8-9-1-6).

BOSTON COLLEGE 73, (19) NOTRE DAME 71: Cameron Swartz scored 28 points, Makayla Dickens added 20 and Boston College (13-5, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) erased a 14-point deficit to defeat visiting Notre Dame (13-4, 4-2).

The Fighting Irish, who led by 14 with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, missed their last four shots, including three in the last four seconds, and had two turnovers after Dara Mabrey’s 3-pointer put them ahead 70-67 with 3 1/2 minutes to play.

(20) NORTH CAROLINA 61, VIRGINIA 52: Deja Kelly scored 18 points, Kennedy Todd-Williams added 15 and host North Carolina (15-2, 5-2 ACC) held Virginia (3-12, 0-5) to four points in the second quarter.

The Tar Heels have won the last four games in the series and 24 of the last 27. Virginia’s last win in Chapel Hill was during the 2000-01 season.

FLORIDA 77, (23) KENTUCKY 52: Kiki Smith scored 25 points, Alberte Rimdal continued her hot 3-point shooting in adding 15 and visiting Florida (14-5, 4-2 SEC) won its fourth straight game by beating short-handed Kentucky (8-6, 1-3).

The Wildcats lost double-figure scorer Robyn Benton to an apparent leg injury early in the second quarter, leaving Kentucky with seven available players.

(25) IOWA 105, MINNESOTA 49: Caitlin Clark recorded her second straight triple-double, setting a Big Ten record with her fourth of the season, and was responsible for as many points as Minnesota scored as visiting Iowa (11-4, 5-1) rolled over the Golden Gophers (9-10, 2-5).

Clark had 35 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists for the first back-to-back triple-doubles in conference history, helping the Hawkeyes record their biggest win ever against a conference opponent.

MARYLAND: Florida guard Lavender Briggs is transferring to Maryland.

The 6-foot-1 Briggs averaged 12.5 points this season at Florida in 14 games. She is currently out for the rest of the season because of a stress fracture in her left shin.

MEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 3, HAMILTON 1: Albert Washco and Chris Brown had second-period goals as the Polar Bears (4-5, 4-3 NESCAC) took control and topped the Continentals (5-4, 4-3) at Hamilton, New York.

Joe Alexander also scored for Bowdoin in the final minute.

Nick Rutigliano had a power-play goal for Hamilton early in the first period.

Alex Kozic stopped 33 shots for the Polar Bears, and Sean Storr had 25 saves for the Continentals.

NOTES

NCAA: NCAA member schools voted to ratify a new, pared-down constitution, paving the way for a decentralized approach to governing college sports that will hand more power to schools and conferences.

The vote was overwhelmingly in favor, 801-195, and was the main order of business at the NCAA’s annual convention.

NCAA President Mark Emmert said in his state of college sports address the new constitution was more of a “declaration of independence” that will allow each of the association’s three divisions to govern itself.
