HOCKEY
Patrick Shea scored twice, linemate Mathew Santos had a goal and an assist, and the Maine Mariners got three goals in the third period for a 4-1 win Sunday against the Orlando Solar Bears at Cross Insurance Arena.
Shea put the Mariners ahead late in the first period, and goals by Santos and Shea early in the third extended the lead to 3-0.
Orlando’s Luke Boka ended Callum Booth’s shutout bid with 3:46 remaining, but Cameron Askew clinched it with an empty-net goal.
Booth finished with 31 saves.
• The ECHL suspended Jacob Panetta after the brother of longtime NHL defenseman P.K. Subban accused the Jacksonville Iceman defenseman of making “monkey gestures” in his direction.
The league said the indefinite suspension is pending a hearing under its collective bargaining agreement with its players. Jacksonville then announced it had to decided to cut Panetta.
The incident occurred 23 seconds into overtime during the Icemen’s 1-0 home victory over South Carolina on Saturday, comes in the wake of minor league forward Krystof Hrabik’s 30-game suspension for making a racial gesture during a Jan. 12 AHL game.
Video posted by P.K. Subban on Twitter shows Panetta taking a monkey-like pose while Jordan Subban is being led away by an official. Jordan Subban, who is Black, then skates back toward Panetta and the two lock up at the beginning of a multiplayer skirmish.
GOLF
PGA: Hudson Swafford won The American Express for the second time in five years, breaking a late tie with an eagle on the 16th hole in a closing-round 8-under 64 at La Quinta, California.
Swafford beat Tom Hoge by two strokes after beginning the day three strokes behind rookies Lee Hodges and Paul Barjon.
LPGA: Danielle Kang ran off five birdies in a seven-hole stretch in the middle of her round, posted the low score Sunday at 4-under 68 and sprinted away to a three-shot victory at the season-opening Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida.
Kang finished at 16-under 272, three shots clear of Canada’s Brooke Henderson (70).
EUROPEAN TOUR: Thomas Pieters claimed the sixth and biggest European Tour title of his career, winning the Abu Dhabi Championship by one shot in the United Arab Emirates.
The Belgian, who turns 30 next week, shot an even-par 72 for a total of 278 to edge Rafa Cabrera Bello and Shubhankar Sharma.
SKIING
WORLD CUP: Sofia Goggia is going to need to recover in a hurry from a series of injuries following another crash on Sunday if she’s going to be able to defend her Olympic downhill title next month.
Goggia would have been an overwhelming favorite for another gold – or two: She’s also a force in super-G.
But she sprained her left knee, partially tore a cruciate ligament and suffered a “minor fracture” of the fibula bone in her leg – plus some tendon damage – when she did the splits at high speed then tumbled down the mountain during a super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, the Italian ski team said after a medical evaluation in Milan.
Goggia’s teammate, Elena Curtoni, mastered a tricky course and finished 0.09 seconds ahead of Austria’s Tamara Tippler. Michelle Gisin was third, 0.24 behind.
Overall World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin took few risks and placed 16th.
Goggia’s crash came a day after she won a downhill in Cortina with another wild run – a victory she labeled “one of the greatest wins” of her career.
Goggia will start physical rehab on Monday with the aim of returning in time for the downhill at the Beijing Olympics on Feb. 15. She’ll likely miss the Olympic giant slalom on Feb. 7 and the super-G on Feb. 11.
• Beat Feuz was 0.21 seconds ahead of Swiss teammate Marco Odermatt on the storied Streif downhill course in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
Daniel Hemetsberger of Austria finished third, 0.90 behind Feuz.

ENGLAND: Liverpool won 3-1 at Crystal Palace sparked by first-half goals from Virgil Van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Fabinho also converted penalty as Liverpool moved to within nine points of Premier League leader Manchester City with one few game played.
• A superb strike from Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva’s headed goal gave Chelsea a 2-0 win over Tottenham to end a four-match winless run in the Premier League.
Chelsea is in third place but trails Manchester City by 10 points. Tottenham is down to seventh, but just two points out of the top four.
SPAIN: Real Madrid needed a stoppage-time goal by Eder Militao to salvage a 2-2 home draw against Elche and keep its four-point advantage over Sevilla at the top of the Spanish league.
