WINSLOW — The Winslow boys basketball team further positioned itself among the Class B North challengers Thursday night.
Jason Reynolds scored 19 points while grabbing nine rebounds, and the Black Raiders defeated Leavitt, itself a contender in Class B South, 52-34.
Andrew Poulin added 15 points while Antoine Akoa scored 10 for Winslow (9-3). The Hornets, who got eight points from Degan Jordan, fell to 8-4.
“Defense is a priority,” Winslow coach Ken Lindlof said. “The last couple of games we’ve had some breakdowns, but tonight I thought we were real solid throughout.”
The victory provided the ideal turnaround for the Black Raiders after they lost on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to Lawrence two nights prior.
“I’m excited to move on to the rest of the season,” Reynolds said. “I think this is a statement win for us. Coming off the loss on the buzzer against Lawrence, I feel like a win today really helps get us back into the groove.”
The Black Raiders pinned the Hornets early. Leavitt took a 6-2 lead, but Winslow scored the next seven points of the quarter, and then the first 12 of the second. Poulin had eight points and Reynolds had six in that stretch, and by halftime, Winslow had a 31-13 lead. It was 41-20 after three, and the Hornets, who struggled from the field for three quarters, didn’t get closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
“I think we showed up really well,” Reynolds said. “We knew that today was going to be a tough challenge for both teams, and … we came out of the gates strong and kept that throughout.”
Winslow also got six points on a pair of 3-pointers from Nick Girard. Leavitt got six points, also on a pair of threes, from Ian Redstone, while Hunter Hayes and Brett Coburn each grabbed seven rebounds.
