AP POLL: Auburn keeps winning, Kentucky is rising and that has the Southeastern Conference putting its imprint atop this week’s The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll.

Bruce Pearl’s Tigers earned 49 of 61 first-place votes in the new poll to extend the program’s first stay at No. 1 for a second straight week, and John Calipari’s Wildcats jumped to No. 5 for the program’s highest ranking in the AP Top 25 in more than two years. The SEC has a pair of top-five teams for the first time in nearly three years.

Auburn (20-1) has won 17 straight games since losing a double-overtime game to Connecticut in November. The Tigers earned a narrow win at Missouri in their first game at No. 1 then followed with Saturday’s home win against Oklahoma, not to mention the school reaching a deal with Pearl for an eight-year contract.

Kentucky (17-4) had the week’s biggest jump, rising seven spots after winning by 18 at Kansas on Saturday. This marks the highest ranking for Kentucky since the 2019-20 season, when the Wildcats spent one week at No. 1 in the first regular-season poll and sat at No. 6 in early March.

Gonzaga remained at No. 2 and earned the other 12 first-place votes. UCLA climbed to No. 3, followed by Purdue – which claimed its first No. 1 ranking earlier this season. The Bruins opened the year at No. 2 and have now spent 11 weeks inside the top five, the Boilermakers nine.

Michigan scored the opening nine points of the game and never trailed to knock the Hoosiers out of sole possession of first place in the Big Ten Conference. The Wolverines had never beaten a top-five team at home, but did win at then-No. 5 Baylor in overtime on Dec. 19.

AP POLL: Michigan moved up one spot to sixth in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll, the team’s highest ranking ever.

South Carolina remained the No. 1 team in the poll, garnering 29 of the 30 first-place votes from a national media panel after beating Vanderbilt, then-No. 24 Mississippi and Florida. Third-ranked North Carolina State received the other top vote. Stanford stayed at No. 2.

FOOTBALL

AUBURN: Offensive coordinator Austin Davis is resigning six weeks after taking the job.

Tigers Coach Bryan Harsin and Davis both said the newly hired coordinator and quarterbacks coach was leaving for personal reasons. Davis said he has decided “to step away from coaching football.”

“My decision to resign is 100% based on personal reasons,” Davis said in a statement. “After more than a decade in the NFL with the daily grind as a player and coach I’ve realized how much I miss my family and my desire to spend more time with them.”

Harsin hired Davis on Dec. 18. The first-year Auburn coach fired offensive coordinator Mike Bobo after a 6-6 regular season before ending with a loss to Houston in the Birmingham Bowl.

GEORGIA: Georgia has hired assistant coach Bryan McClendon to return to his alma mater less than a month after he took a job with Miami.

McClendon had been on new Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal’s staff at Oregon, and he followed Cristobal to Miami, taking a job early this month as receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator.

But on Monday, the national champion Bulldogs announced McClendon is joining Coach Kirby Smart’s staff as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator, the same titles McClendon had for the previous two seasons at Oregon.

WISCONSIN: Coach Paul Chryst has reached into the pro ranks to hire Bobby Engram from the Ravens as his offensive coordinator.

Engram, 49, has spent the last eight seasons as an assistant coach with Baltimore, starting as a wide receivers coach for five seasons and spending the last three seasons as a tight ends coach, working with All-Pro selection Mark Andrews.
