SKOWHEGAN — A Canaan man was arrested this week after police say he and another person broke into a Skowhegan home and attempted to steal a television.

Bradley Houghton, 42, was arrested and charged with theft by unauthorized taking, criminal trespass and burglary, according to Skowhegan police Chief David Bucknam.

The incident occurred Monday at about 4:30 a.m. when the owner of a rental property on Avore Street received a notification from security cameras and watched Houghton on video enter the home, clad in a ski mask, Bucknam said. The property owner lives in Athens.

Bucknam said the home was used as a rental property that was “empty and locked up” at the time.

An officer responded and heard a man talking inside and the front door open, Bucknam said. “He entered the residence and encountered a masked individual identified as (Houghton) carrying a flat screen TV in his hands,” he said.

Houghton was removed from the home and taken into custody. When the officer and a second officer returned to the home to clear the residence, the two heard footsteps inside followed by the sound of glass shattering as a person jumped out a window.

“After clearing the residence, a search was conducted for the other person but they were unable to locate,” Bucknam said.

Houghton was taken to the Somerset County Jail in Madison. The investigation was ongoing, Bucknam said.
