Should boat moorings along local shorelines be restricted to lakefront property owners?

That question has taken center stage in the town of Winthrop, with a new town ordinance taking effect April 7 that seeks to limit boat moorings along the shores of town waters to just those who also own nearby lakefront property.

The landmark Norcross Point area of Maranacook Lake in town is the most visible public where the new rules will have an impact, with the town manager estimated some 20 moorings there would be considered illegal. The town this week heard pushback from some people who asked the town to revisit the rules and instead provide different options such as a paid fee who those who don’t own lakefront property.

Under Winthrop’s new rules, people whose moorings are now illegal have a 90-day grace period with which to remove them from local waters, or else face potential fines.

But what do you think? Should such moorings be allowable only to those who own lakefront property? Let us know what you think in the poll and comments below.
