Should Maine public schools teach sexual orientation and gender diversity as part of curriculum?

A controversial video released and then taken down by the Maine Department of Education intended as an online kindergarten lesson about holidays like Pride Day and what it means to be transgender.

The incident highlighted the fact that the Department of Education, under Gov. Janet Mills, says sexual orientation and gender diversity should be represented in public school curriculum. Not doing so is a disservice to all students, the department says, though the state doesn’t require such lessons and instead leaves it up to each district whether to address the topics.

A recent study says about three-quarters of Maine’s schools have no LGBTQ policies at all.

But what do you think? Do you think Maine public schools should teach sexual orientation and gender diversity as part of curriculum? Let us know what you think the poll and comments below.
