Several years ago Pratt began rug hooking and taking lessons in a person’s private home. Rug hooking soon became her favorite indoor past time. Over the years she has attended many day, weekend, and weeklong rug hooking retreats, according to a news release from the society.

Pratt received her five years certificate from a St. Joseph’s College week-long retreat, taking classes from McGowan teachers, learning different techniques and the history of rug hooking.

A display of rugs that show a variety of themes to hook will be displayed throughout the center exhibit room.

Rug hooking was quite popular in colonial New England, where scraps of cloth were plentiful in the cottages around the northeastern states and maritime Canada.

Today rug hooking is considered a fine art.
