TOWNSHIP D — A 17-year-old girl from southern Maine was seriously injured Saturday after a rock came loose and she fell 40 feet at Angel Falls and landed in the water.

The teenager, who was with her family, climbed up about 40 feet on the right side of the falls when a large rock came loose, Game Warden Maddie Killian said Monday.

“She pretty much rolled down the rocks,” Killian said. The girl had head trauma, multiple bruises and was complaining of pain in several areas of her body, she said.

Killian, along with Rangeley Fire Rescue, U.S. Border Patrol, NorthStar EMS and members of the Roxbury Fire Department, hiked about a half-mile to help carry out the teen on a rescue litter.

The fall was reported at about 12:30 p.m.

“The terrain was quite rocky and treacherous, very little of it was flat,” Camdan Carmichael, a Rangeley firefighter, said. It is a 90-foot waterfall, he said. The trail is kind of gradual but crosses a stream quite a few times, according to Killian.

It took nearly two hours to carry the girl to the base of the falls and then to the parking lot. She was flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland by LifeFlight.

The teen was released from the hospital Sunday. Killian said she has serious facial injuries and bruises on the rest of her body.
