The Troops at Camden, a Maine living history group interpreting the period 1779-1814, will be encamped from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, on the grounds of the 1770s Thorndike Homestead at 7 Commercial St. in Rockport. This free, family friendly event is an opportunity for the public to learn what life was like in midcoast Maine during the Revolutionary War period and in the years that followed. This event is part of a series of encampments taking place monthly, through October, according to a news release from the Camden-Rockport Historical Society.

Children will have an opportunity to take part in a mock “basic training for new soldiers,” based on Von Steuben’s Revolutionary War manual. Upon completion of their instruction, the new recruits will receive enlistment papers, which they can sign using a quill and ink. The sessions last 20-30 minutes, and will be offered at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m. Upon arrival, interested families should visit the “recruiting officer” at his desk for more information about participation.

The historic Thorndike house also will be open to the public. Visitors can learn about 18th century daily living through demonstrations and participatory activities. On the surrounding grounds, there will be soldier campfire cooking with recipes from the period, as well as a weaving demonstration. Camden militia reenactors from the Revolutionary War period, as well and the War of 1812 will show the arms and accoutrements of a local soldier. Families will be able to try out a variety of Colonial games and toys.

Special guest Hannes Moll will demonstrate blacksmithing techniques in the Homestead’s Blacksmith Shop. The building is equipped with a working forge and features a unique oxen lift.

Don Rainville, a period home and furniture restoration professional, will be on hand to discuss furniture of the 18th century. Rainville is also happy to offer free consultations to visitors who have questions about their house or antique furniture.
