There was an AP article in the Sept. 7 Sentinel about how nearly a dozen states were enacting laws in regards to school shootings (“Are states making classrooms safer?“). Most of those states passed laws that did nothing to ban assault weapons. Rather, these states passed laws that would increase security involving armed agents and in some cases, even arming teachers. In other words, bring more guns into the schools.
That would be tantamount to trying to put out a house fire with a flame thrower. The only time shooting incidents became less common was while a ban on assault weapons was in place. Since the ban was lifted, mass shootings have been on the increase.
