HARTLAND — Fire early Saturday destroyed a two-car garage on Loon Cove Road and all six cords of firewood inside that the family had put up for the winter.

Fire Chief Charles Gould said the fire at the property of his aunt, Norma Gould, was reported between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. and appears to have started by a generator placed in the garage after the power went out in town around 10 p.m. Friday.

“The garage was a total loss — it was flat,” he said.

Gould said the generator had been purchased new and the family had used it only about 1 1/2 hours.

“They had set it in the garage and somehow, that started the fire,” he said.

He advised people not to place generators inside buildings.

“I recommend they put it away from buildings,” he said.

The garage was about 20-by-50-feet in size and 20 years old, and contained the firewood, tools and other items typically stored inside a garage, according to the chief.

“By the time we got there, she was fully engulfed,” he said.

Gould said his aunt’s home, fortunately, was across the road from the garage, 25 to 30 feet away. The garage was insured, he said.

Loon Cove Road is a camp road off Route 23, leading to Morrill Pond, he said.

About 25 firefighters from Hartland, St. Albans and Canaan worked at the scene, according to Gould, who said Central Maine Power Co. and Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Ambulance also responded.

No one was injured in the fire, he said. Firefighters were at the scene until about 6 a.m.
