WATERVILLE — Local residents can experience a day of free cross-country skiing and other winter activities, set for Saturday, Feb. 11, at Quarry Road Trails, 300 Quarry Road.

The city-hosted event offers a free pass for the Nordic trails. Also, a free alpine trail pass will be available, valid from noon to 2 p.m. Free Nordic ski clinics will also be offered at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., according to a news release from the Waterville Parks and Recreation.

This community ski free day offers several family friendly activities between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Free activities include snow shoe tours, story walk, terrain park, scavenger hunt, snowbank art, obstacle course, and a fire pit with s’mores. There will be a cost for Nordic ski equipment rentals. Community partners for this event are Inland Hospital, Waterville Creates, Children’s Discovery Museum and Friends of Quarry Road.

Quarry Road Trails’ state-of-the-art snowmaking system ensures that the ski trails are covered, even in periods of low natural snowfall. The Nordic ski trails are open all day throughout the season with lights for night skiing on over a mile of trail. Downhill skiing on the rope tow ski hill will be available at a minimal cost on every Saturday and Sunday from January through March.

The Welcome Center yurt is open weekends from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to provide snacks, information, Nordic ski rentals (January and February) and free snowshoes to loan.

This community event and the Quarry Road Trails are supported through ski pass sales, donations, collaboration with partnering organizations, and contributions from annual sponsors. This year’s current gold level sponsors are Central Maine Motors, MaineGeneral Health, Fabian Oil, Kennebec Savings Bank. Current silver sponsors are Sheridan, Northern Light Inland Hospital, Maine State Credit Union, and bronze level support provided by Stio.
