The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Monday it will send $2.7 million to Maine to reimburse the state for personal protective equipment provided to state employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The masks and other protective equipment were distributed to employees in the Department of Education, Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control.

The federal agency also said it will send nearly $3.7 million to reimburse Maine Medical Center in Portland for the cost of testing employees and hiring temporary staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. Maine Medical Center administered 66,406 COVID tests to employees, it said.

FEMA grants awarded to Maine have now exceeded $232 million for pandemic-related expenses, according to the agency.
