Marcelo Mayer, the top-rated prospect in the Boston Red Sox farm system, will join the Portland Sea Dogs this week.

A 20-year-old shortstop, Mayer will join the Sea Dogs on Tuesday for the start of their series in New Jersey against the Somerset Patriots. Mayer’s promotion was confirmed Sunday night by Brian Abraham, Boston’s director of player development. Mayer is Boston’s top prospect on MLB.com and Soxprospects.com.

The fourth overall pick in the 2021 draft out of Eastlake High in Chula Vista, California, Mayer hit .290 with seven home runs, 34 RBI and 23 runs scored in 34 games with High-A Greenville this season. In 2022, split between Greenville and Low-A Salem, Mayer hit .280 with 13 home runs, 53 RBI and 61 runs.

Mayer and the Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field on June 6 to begin a series against the Akron Rubber Ducks. At 30-15, Portland is in first place in the Eastern League’s Northeast Division, with a 4 1/2 game lead over Somerset.
