HALLOWELL — Police are investigating after two bodies were discovered Thursday in a Water Street apartment in downtown Hallowell.

Christopher Giles, interim Hallowell police chief, said Friday the bodies of Lawrence Iaciofano III, 39, who was the tenant at 155 Water St., and Jonathan Teeney, 38, of Augusta were discovered when a friend stopped by around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Police were at the apartment, near the intersection of Water and Union streets, for several hours Thursday evening.

The manner and cause of death have not yet been determined. Autopsies were scheduled to take place Friday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, but the results of toxicology tests are expected to take several weeks.

He said the deaths appeared to be the result of drug overdoses, but the investigation continues.

In 2022, more than 700 people in Maine died from fatal drug overdoses, with fentanyl factoring in to more than 500 of them.

Giles said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
