PITTSFIELD — Pittsfield-area schools closed Tuesday after a student received a threat through the social media platform Snapchat.

The nature of the threat is unclear at this time, but Maine School Administrative District 53 confirmed in a message to parents that the Pittsfield Police Department and school resource officer were notified and launched an investigation Monday.

The notice to parents confirmed the threat was made over Snapchat, which is a social media platform where users can send photos or messages that delete within a 24-hour span.

District Superintendent Sharon Littlefield said she has no further information at this time.

Pittsfield police Chief Vicente Morris referred questions to Littlefield on Tuesday morning.

MSAD 53 has around 845 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, according to the state Department of Education, and includes Manson Park, Vickery and Warsaw Middle schools and Central Maine Institute, all in Pittsfield.
