SKOWHGEAN — A 61-year-old Anson man arrested in March for an alleged violent domestic assault was indicted in May on charges stemming from the incident and additional charges that he later tampered with the victim and attempted to solicit a murder.

Brian D. Cloutier was indicted by a Somerset County grand jury on charges of Class A domestic violence aggravated assault, Class A kidnapping, Class C domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and Class D domestic violence assault in connection with the March 20 incident that led to his arrest, according to court records.

Cloutier allegedly strangled and injured the victim during the March incident, a Somerset County sheriff’s deputy wrote in an affidavit at the time of Cloutier’s arrest. The victim was able to escape the Anson home and seek help from a neighbor, who called the police.

Following the incident, Cloutier attempted to coerce the victim of the alleged assault “to withhold testimony, information, or evidence,” according to court records. He also attempted to send letters to the victim, court records show.

The Morning Sentinel does not identify the victims of domestic violence or other violent crimes without their consent.

For those alleged crimes, which occurred April 12, 16 and 30 and May 3, Cloutier was indicted on four counts of Class B tampering with a victim and two counts of Class D attempted violation of condition of release, according to the indictment.

In addition, Cloutier was indicted on one count of Class A criminal solicitation. On April 26, Cloutier, “with the intent to cause the commission of the crime of murder, … did command or attempt to induce another person, a principal, or an accomplice to commit murder,” the indictment says. The indictment does not say who was the intended murder victim.

Cloutier continues to be held at the Somerset County Jail in Madison, according to online jail records.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt but indicates enough evidence exists for a case to move forward to trial.
