AUGUSTA — A lieutenant with the Winslow Fire Department was indicted on a charge that he stole more than $10,000 from the Winslow Firefighters Association.

Shawn Stetson, 35, of Fairfield, allegedly withdrew more than $12,000 in cash from accounts managed by the association, according to the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, whose deputies arrested Stetson in January.

He was indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury May 22 on a single, Class B count of theft by unauthorized taking. The indictment alleges the thefts took place between April 6 and Dec. 22, 2023 in Winslow.

A Class B crime is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Kennebec County Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Read said in a statement that an investigation by the association revealed several thousand dollars were missing from various accounts and CDs belonging to the association, totaling more than $12,000.

Winslow Town Manager Ella Bowman has said the money was taken from accounts related to the association’s fundraising efforts.

According to the town’s website at the time of his arrest, Stetson joined the fire department in 2021 after working for fire departments in Oakland, Fairfield, Waterville and Yarmouth.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but an indication that enough evidence exists to move toward trial.
