Shame on you! The opinion piece in the KJ Aug. 6, written by Ryan Bilodeau, communications associate with St. John Paul II Parish, repeats the falsehood, with no comment from you, the editor of the KJ, that an artistic presentation at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics was a parody of da Vinci’s Last Supper (“Opinion: From da Vinci to the Liberty Bell, symbols still matter.”)
There are many pieces of art that appear similar to The Last Supper — artistic depictions of people enjoying a feast at a long table, many created before da Vinci’s work. The (apparent) fact that Bilodeau is unaware of those other works of art — a fact that has repeatedly been in the news in response to criticisms like Bilodeau’s — does not absolve you, the editor, from not noting that fact.
Bilodeau is entitled to his opinion, but when he presents that opinion as fact, and uses his misperception to (implicitly) criticize drag queens, it calls for you, the editor, to provide the facts.
