SIDNEY — A woman was hospitalized with  injuries after driving into a tree in the Interstate 95 median near Sidney, authorities confirmed Saturday.

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. Friday when a box truck driven by Ashley Peters, 42, of Ellsworth, began swerving on I-95 before entering the median and slamming into a tree, according to Maine State Police spokesperson Aaron Turcotte.

“State Police dispatch received a call about a box truck driving erratically northbound from mile 112,” he said in a news release. “As troopers were moving to intercept the truck, multiple calls came in to report that the same truck had crashed into the median at mile 118 in Sidney.”

The truck, owned by Eastern Mold Remediation, was rolled on to its side when troopers arrived. Peters had reportedly fallen asleep behind the wheel and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to Turcotte.

She was transported to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with “serious, non-life-threatening injuries,” Turcotte said.

Northbound traffic on I-95 was restricted to one lane for about three hours Friday afternoon until crews cleared the scene around 6 p.m., according to Maine State Police.
