Cooper Flagg hasn’t played his first college game yet, but his high-profile marketing career is underway.

Flagg, a freshman with the Duke University men’s basketball team and Newport native, has signed with New Balance, the company said in a release sent out Monday.

Flagg is shown in an advertisement video the footwear and apparel company posted on its Instagram account.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. A New Balance spokesperson declined to answer questions about about the value and length of the contract. Flagg’s agent’s office also declined to provide that information. The deal is Flagg’s first announced, high-profile endorsement.

“I grew up wearing New Balance, and I appreciate their authentic connection to my community,” Flagg said in the release. “The focus and growth of the brand in basketball and our shared values and history drew me in. From day one, it was clear that this would be a family-like partnership. I’m so excited to join this family and help them grow the category with young athletes.”

The advertisement is based around Flagg’s Maine roots. In the roughly 45-second video, Flagg is shown shooting hoops in a driveway following quick establishing shots of a Maine town, while “Glory Bound” by Roy Williams plays in the background. A paperboy then comes up on a bicycle and delivers Flagg a newspaper, with a headline reading “Cooper Flagg, The Intelligent Choice.”

New Balance is a New England-based company, with headquarters in Boston and a manufacturing facility close to Newport in Skowhegan. Flagg’s mother, Kelly, said that “keeping Maine a part of Cooper’s story is important to him.”

Athletes signed with the brand include baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani, NBA All-Star Kawhi Leonard and WNBA star Cameron Brink.

“Cooper adds so much to our basketball roster, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the New Balance family,” said Naveen Lokesh, the company’s head of basketball sports marketing. “He is a force to be reckoned with on the court, and we look forward to building our relationship as he grows the game and supporting him in all his endeavors.”

Flagg enters college basketball after a high school career at Nokomis Regional High and then Montverde Academy in Florida that saw him become the consensus top prospect in the country. He won the Naismith Award as the nation’s top boys’ high school player, and was also named the national Gatorade Player of the Year.
